Eleven Ivies Taken in MLL Draft
Created: 6/5/2007 10:06:53 AM

A total of 11 Ivy Leaguers were selected in the five-round, 50-pick Major League Lacrosse draft last Thursday — nearly twice as many as the six Ivies taken in the 2006 Draft.

National semifinalist Cornell had five players picked, more than any other school in the country. Three Princeton seniors were chosen; while Brown, Dartmouth and Harvard had one each.

Cornell attackman David Mitchell was the first Ivy Leaguer selected, going in the first round (eighth overall) to the Boston Cannons. Big Red teammate and USILA Goalie of the Year Matt McMonagle was the Ivy's only other first-rounder, as he went to the Long Island Lizards with the tenth overall pick.

Mitch Belisle (Los Angeles Riptide — Second round, 12th overall), Brian Clayton (Rochester Rattlers — Third round, 23rd overall) and Eric Pittard (Washington Bayhawks — Fifth round, 44th overall) joined Mitchell and McMonagle from Ivy League champions Cornell.

Princeton defender Zachary Jungers was taken in the second round (14th overall) by the Denver Outlaws and was joined in the draft by Tiger teammates Peter Trombino (Philadelphia Barrage — Third round, 27th overall) and Scott Sowanick (Denver Outlaws — Third round, 29th overall).

Brown midfielder Alex Buckley (Los Angeles Riptide — Second round, 17th overall), Dartmouth attackman Nick Bonacci (Long Island Lizards — Fourth round, 34th overall) and Harvard midfielder John Henry Flood (Washington Bayhawks — Fourth round, 32nd overall) round out the list of Ivies.

Dan Kallaugher, drafted by the Chicago Machine (Second round, 20th overall) played three seasons for Yale before using his fourth year as a post-graduate at Loyola.
