Cornell's Travis Mayer, one of four former Olympic medal winners among 14 athletes on the 2006 Olympic Freestyle Team, has become the 23rd Ivy Leaguer to earn a spot at the Torino Games.Cornell becomes the sixth Ivy school to have a Torino Olympian.
A surprise silver medalist at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, it was his first career appearance at a major championship. He was named to the team this time around because of his second-place finish at the World Cup in Germany in December. He injured his knee in Lake Placid in January, but he is expected to be at full speed in Torino.
After his freshman semester at Cornell, Mayer took a leave of absence from December 2000 through the Salt Lake Games. He then returned to school, and has been working toward an economics degree. His older brothers, Garrett and Eric, are Cornell graduates.
Only one Winter Games (Salt Lake CIty in 2002) featured more Ivy Leaguers (26). In all, since the turn of the century, 158 Ivy Leaguers have been Olympians (2000 Sydney, 2002 Salt Lake City, 2004 Athens and 2006 Torino).
