Brown’s William Burroughs ’05 (Yuma, Ariz.) has earned the Division I men’s National Sportsmanship Award, given by the NCAA to the student-athlete “that characterizes the highest level of respect, caring, fairness, civility, honesty, integrity and responsibility during competition.”
Burroughs was a tri-captain on the 2004-05 Brown football team and the starting left tackle. He helped pave the way for tailback Nick Hartigan ’06 to rush for 1,263 yards, second in the League to Harvard’s Clifton Dawson, as well as a League-best 17 touchdowns.
Overall, the Bears finished third in the League in total offense at 362 yards per game, and Hartigan is just 500 yards away from becoming the school’s all-time rushing leader.
Burroughs received the David Zucconi Award in May, which is awarded to the Brown male varsity athlete who most consistently displays the ideals of sportsmanship. A three-year starter on the Bears' offensive line, Burroughs was a four-year member of Brown's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, including two years as president. Burroughs did extensive volunteer work in the Rhode Island community, donating his time at the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School and at the Special Olympics. He also served as a volunteer coach for the Woonsocket Youth Football League.
Burrough established the "Never Quit" Foundation in honor of teammate and friend Lawrence Rubida for cancer research, raising over $2,000. A Meiklejohn Advisor, he set up and ran a study hall for freshmen football players and was selected for "Teach for America", where he will teach for two years in an underprivileged school in Phoenix, Ariz.
Burroughs was one of six recipients, one male and female per classification, spanning Divisions I, II and III. The other winners were Xavier’s Lauren Clay (Division I), Georgian Court’s Sheery Keech and Bryant’s Michael Williams (Division II), and Wilson’s Lisa Schroyer and Bates’ Phillip Barr (Division III).
Burroughs was also profiled in the 2004 Ivy League Football Media Guide. To read Eddy Lentz’s feature, click here.
