Finishing the regular season with 44 career goals, 103 career points, 17 goals on the season and 43 points on the season, all school records, will earn a lot of respect. Princeton senior forward Esmeralda Negron (Harrington Park, N.J.) added the honor of 2004 Ivy League Player of the Year to her resume. She was also chosen as one of four unanimous selections to the first team. Negron led the Tigers to a school record 15 wins as well as the programs first 7-0-0 season. Princeton, who did not lose a game at home this season, is only the fourth school in Ivy history to win all seven League games.
Negron’s Tiger teammate, freshman midfielder Diana Matheson (Oakville, Ont.), was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Matheson scored seven goals along with five assists on the season as a key member of the Princeton offense. Matheson was named Ivy Rookie of the Week on three separate occasions; no other player won the honor twice. It was clear from the very start of the season that Matheson was a special player. She was the League’s very first Rookie of the Week after scoring goals against Villanova and Texas A&M, and adding an assist versus Vanderbilt.
The Ivy League Champion Princeton Tigers didn’t take all of the honors though; Harvard senior defender Liza Barber (West Des Moines, Iowa) and Penn senior forward Katy Cross (Claremont, Calif.) were also unanimous selections to the first team. Barber played in all 16 games for the Crimson and recorded three assists on the year. Cross was a star for the Quakers. Her 12 goals and seven assists were both good for second in the League.
Three Bulldogs were also named to the first team. Sophomore midfielder Christina Huang (Potomac, Md.), junior midfielder Laurel Karnes (Omaha, Neb.), and senior goalkeeper Sarah Walker (Alameda, Calif.) were all named to the first team. Huang started every game for Yale and finished the season with seven points (three goals, one assists). Her teammate at the midfield position, Karnes, tied for the Bulldog lead with six goals while starting each of Yale’s 17 games. Walker, who was tied for first in the League with seven shutouts, was third in the League in both saves (75) and goals against average (0.83). Yale won 13 games this season and is heading to their second NCAA Tournament in the last three years.
In addition to Harvard’s Barber, a trio of junior defenders were added to the first-team at the full back position. Princeton’s Romy Trigg-Smith (Kailua, Hawaii ), Penn’s Robin Watson (Hamilton, Mass.) and Brown’s Kim LaVere (Chatsworth, Calif.) all earned the honor at defense. Trigg-Smith had played every minute of every game for the Tigers up until the last game of the season. She ended the season with four points (one goal and two assists). Watson also started every Quaker games. She was 2-for-2 on penalty kicks on the season and finished with seven points (three goals, one assist). LaVere started all 15 games she played and finished the season with three points (one goal, one assist).
In total, four Princeton student-athletes were selected to the first team, more than any other school. In addition to Negron, Matheson and Trigg-Smith, junior forward Emily Behncke (Williamsburg, Va.) was also named to the first team. Behncke finished the season with 22 points (nine goals, four assists).
