The foursome was a part of USA Hockey's Women's Select Team, which was recently
named The United States Olympic Committee Team of the Month. The team earned
four wins and the gold medal at the 2003 Four Nations Cup in Skovde, Sweden,
November, 5-9. This marked only the second time the U.S. has captured the gold
at the Cup and the third time that the U.S. has defeated Canada in a gold-medal
situation.
Dreyer and Sara DeCosta-Hayes combined to earn a 0.49 goals-against average
and .977 save percentage, allowing only two goals in 101 shots. The U.S. scored
17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points in four games. Dreyer was also runner-up
among the female candidates for the Athlete of the Month award. She recorded
two victories against Canada and led the 2003 U.S. Women's Select Team (4-0-0)
to its second-ever gold medal at the Four Nations Cup in Skovde. She earned
a .986 save percentage and recorded a 0.48 goals-against average, allowing one
goal in 72 shots. In the gold-medal game versus Canada, Dreyer stopped 36 of
37 shots through regulation as well as all 11 shootout goal attempts by Team
Canada to back-stop the U.S. to a gold medal, Dreyer's first of her career.
Harvard
has four women. Julie Chu (Fairfield, Conn.), Jamie Hagerman (Wenham,
Mass.), Lauren McAuliffe (North Reading, Mass.) and Angela Ruggiero
(Harper Woods, Mich.) will represent the Crimson at the training camp, which
will serve as a major step in identifying the 2004 U.S. Women's National Team.
That squad will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World
Championship from Mar. 30-Apr. 6 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Ruggiero is the all-time leader in defenseman scoring with 216 career points
(80g, 136a) in 104 career appearances, which is also good for fourth on Harvard's
all-time scoring charts. Ruggiero is just the fourth Crimson skater to score
200 points or more in her career. She joined Jennifer Botterill '03, Tammy Shewchuk
'01 and A.J. Mleczko '99 in that group. Ruggiero has led the nation's defensemen
in scoring in each of her first three years with the Crimson. She is currently
second on the team with 18 points (9g, 9a). She was a Harvard captain during
the 2002-03 campaign serves in that capacity again this season. Ruggiero has
been an integral part of Team USA since the 1998 Olympics. Ruggiero was named
the most outstanding player in the championship game of the Four Nation's Cup,
a game in which the US defeated Canada 2-1 on penalty shots. She received the
Directorate Award as the most outstanding defenseman at the 2002 Olympic Games
and is a three-time first-team All-America for the Crimson.
The 2003 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Chu made an immediate impact for the
Crimson last season, finishing second in the nation in scoring as a freshman.
She has been a member of the national team since 2000 and was named a second-team
All-America and the 2003 ECAC and Ivy League Rookie of the Year. She is third
on the team in scoring with 14 points (5g, 9a) and is already 13th on Harvard's
all-time charts with 107 points (47g, 60a)
McAuliffe is a co-captain for the Crimson this season. She is a key member of
Harvard's top power play unit and four of her five goals this season have come
when the Crimson was skating on the power play. McAuliffe has played in 110
career games, notching 78 points (35g, 43a).
Hagerman was a two-time captain for the Crimson who played in all but one game
during her Harvard career. She most recently played for the Women's Select Team
at the Four Nation's Cup and had been playing for the Brampton Thunder (NWHL).
Hagerman was also a member of the 2000 and 2002 U.S. under-22 National Team
and attended the 2001 USA Hockey National Festival.
Hagerman currently plays for the NWHL Brampton Thunder. In addition, head coach
Ben Smith played three years for Harvard and graduated in 1968.
Dartmouth produced two women named to the camp. Tiffany Hagge (Blaine,
Minn.) and Kristin King '02 (Piqua, Ohio) will be on thier way to Colorado
as well. Hagge is on the No. 2 ranked Big Green squad that currently has a 9-1-1
mark. King ranks ninth all-time in assists at Dartmouth with 69 and finished
her career with 120 points. She is a member of the NWHL Oakville Ice.
Princeton's Andrea Kilbourne '03 (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) rounds out the
list of Ivies. An All-Ivy caliber player, Kilbourne was a member of the 2002
silver-medal winning Olympic team in Salt Lake, scored 11 points (six goals,
five assists) in Ivy play and received ECAC Player of the Week in her final
season.
Included on the roster are 19 members of the 2003 U.S. Women's Select Team which
last month captured the Four Nations Cup title in Sweden. Ten Olympians will
also be in attendance as will an additional 16 players with U.S. Women's National
and/or Select Team experience.
